1978's Hats of Glass was Eela Craig's followup to One Niter, which is simply one of the great highlights of Austrian prog (Austria did not have a huge prog rock scene, Kyrie Eleison and Paternoster are two other groups I know of from that country playing this kind of music). Original vocalist Wil Orthofer had rejoined Eela Craig. The music is more vocal-dominated than One Niter, and also more symphonic, with much of the funk influence gone. It's still an excellent album worth having. The album starts with a cover of Chris de Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling". It's a great cover, and I like the use of spacy synths. The song was also released as a single, because the band probably thought it might be a hit. It's also very recognizable to the original. The title track is one of the album's big highlights, in a rather Pink Floyd-like manner, especially Fritz Riedelberger's guitar playing. It segues into a remake of their 1974 single "Stories", but with new lyrics, and sting synths and Mellotron choir. "Chances Are" features some Mellotron brass, plus some guitar work that points to their next album, Missa Universalis. I also hear something that sounds like Chamberlin brass (it's right in that experimental passage), but I can't imagine any Chamberlins making it to Austria, so I'm sure it was their Mellotron. I really like those synths as well. "Heaven Sales" has a bit of that funk thanks to the use of clavinet, but the lyrics seemed to be critical of commercialized religion. "Holstenwall Fair" is no doubt the album's crowning glory. Featuring some nice vocal passages. Fritz Riedelberger sings the lead, and you get to hear some Mellotron choir in the background. There's a great jam that wouldn't be out of place on One Niter (but without the clavinet). "Caught on the Air" is a soft ballad. Then there's a remake of 1974's "Cheese" (the original was the flip side to "Stories"), this time all-instrumental.Hats of Glass proves that there's still room for great prog in 1978. While the major prog acts pretty much ran out of steam by this point (Yes, ELP, Genesis, Gentle Giant), many of the lesser-known groups were still able to go strong even in the late '70s, and Eela Craig proves that. This album comes highly recommended to all prog rock fans.
